Introducing the Self – The Aware Ego

Each of us walks around with a bunch of different ‘people’ inside playing different roles at different times in our lives. These selves are the central building blocks of the psyche. Most of the time it is either the interaction or dynamic between these selves that creates stress and anxiety in our lives. In the following article, I would like to introduce you to one of these selves, the Aware Ego.

Definition

The Aware Ego is the part of our consciousness that grows out of the ego when we develop more awareness. As a more Aware Ego, we are in a better position to make real choices as opposed to responding automatically and unconsciously.

The Development of the Aware Ego

In the beginning, we believe we are the selves that are active at any given time, like being under the influence of a board of the predominant or primary selves. It is in this state that these selves have usually taken over the executive function of the psyche, the choice maker. When this happens, our ego has identified with particular energy patterns or selves.

Most people believe that they have free will in this state, however, unless we awaken to our conscious process, the vast majority of us are run by those energy patterns with which we have identified or by those which we have disowned.

Developing an Aware Ego is a question of intent and time. People who are interested in becoming more aware and at choice in regards to their reactive pattern will start developing their ego, bring consciousness into their daily activities and therefore evolve their consciousness and the ego becomes an Aware Ego.

Identification and Avoidance

When the ego is identified with any self, for example, a ‘Spiritual Seeker Self’, there will always be an opposing energy pattern or a disowned self to create balance. Mostly, and before an Aware Ego has developed, we are not aware of those parts or want to get rid of those unwanted parts of us. We try hard to disengage from patterns like jealousy, rage, pettiness, shyness, and feelings of inadequacy… the list is endless. In an attempt to avoid or eradicate these rejected selves, we make them stronger by driving them into the unconscious where they are free to operate beyond our control.

Witnessing

With the development of an Aware Ego, we allow ourselves to step back from any self and witness from a level of awareness. The ego receives information made available by the awareness level and by the experience of various selves.

Whose making the decision?

The purpose of developing more awareness is to be at choice as opposed to have our psychological car run by one of the selves without our say.

The consequence, if we accept the information of our Aware Ego, is that there will be no reason to feel bad or guilty about the way we are.

10 Key Principles About Relationships

# 1: Intimacy: The only difference between a love relationship and friendship is intimacy. Ask yourself: With my current partner am I living in a friendship or a love relationship?

# 2: Personal evolution: Relationship is the fastest way to personally evolve. Your partner has VIP access to your hot buttons. Once you are past the honeymoon period you will be pushing each other’s buttons, whether you like it or not, for the purpose of growth and expansion of who you are.

# 3: Knowing one another: The basis of a sound relationship is to know another. It is not about what you know from the past, it is about what you discover freshly every day. Are you referencing your partner through past experience or through what is showing up in the present?

# 4: Affection: Do not assume your spouse knows you love and admire him or her. You need to communicate it frequently. Especially (but not only) in a volatile marriage affection is the key to marital happiness.

Self-Appreciation

Self-Appreciation is the foundation of a healthy self-image and goes hand in hand with self-esteem and self-confidence. It starts with accepting the self and the way in which it is showing up in this life. This might not happen overnight but as a process of self-discovery. Developing self-appreciation will lead to a fuller, healthier and happier life.

Self-judgment and the judgment of others happen as the product of a consciousness developing to a certain level of self-awareness. Self-judgment diminishes self-appreciation when the individual internalizes the consequences that stem from these judgments. Therefore it is crucial to nurture self-esteem and practice self-appreciation to assure the health and well-being of the individual.

Use the following technique to allow Self-Appreciation into your life:

Spiritual Awakening Through Illness

Everyone has had the experience of being sick in their life. Did you get the spiritual awakening and the learnings that were presented to you?

Many of you who are on the path of becoming aware know about the metaphysical causes of illnesses. There are plenty of great books on that topic, among them my favourite from Louise Hay and Lise Bourbeau, which can be an excellent starting point in understanding your dis-ease.

Let’s look at it on a practical level: Take the example of the reoccurring bouts of flu. What are the benefits and potentials for spiritual awakenings in having the flu?

  1. Prioritizing: When your body is weakened by fever and headache you only do what is really important or urgent, like cancelling appointments, calling work to let them know you are not well. You are not wasting time with or worrying about unimportant, trivial matters.
  2. Focus on Health: You become more health conscious, you are mindful of what you eat, drink and what outside influences you expose yourself to.
  3. Speaking the Truth: You might be telling people to stop talking when you’re physically, mentally or emotionally not able to take in more. How often does it happen that you are keeping your mouth shut, when you are well, because you want to be ‘nice’? When you are sick, you are being more honest with yourself and others.
  4. Looking after Self: When you are feeling low, you have to take your own needs seriously. Looking after your body becomes a matter of self-preservation.
  5. Less Ego Fixation: If you are seriously weakened by your illness you will no longer be bothered making a point. It becomes less important to ‘be right’ and more important to ‘be well’.
  6. Sticking with the Essential: When you have throat pain, for example, you are only saying what is really necessary, leaving out all the fluff. Similarly to the previous point you are less attached to being right or being heard and trust that things will sort themselves out.
  7. Allowing Help: This is a great chance for people who find it not so easy to accept help under normal circumstances. When you are ill and cannot do certain tasks, you have to learn to accept and welcome help. For the person helping you it is also much nicer to help you as they won’t hear: ‘Oh no, that’s not necessary, I can do it myself!’

So do you have to get sick to learn those lessons or can you do it while you are well?

Meditation – Basic Practice

May 22, 2009 By Nathalie Himmelrich Leave a Comment

There is a joke in Buddhist circles: “Don’t just do something, sit there.”

What is Meditation?

Meditation is how we train in continuous awareness. It is also how we train in letting go. Meditating might not appear to be very exciting or productive, but try it and give inner peace a chance.

Meditation is a truly transformative spiritual exercise. Beginning meditators do not always connect the simplicity of what they are doing to the essence of the spiritual search, but it is all there to be discovered by those who try it. The Dzogchen teachings of Tibet say one moment of total awareness is one moment of perfect freedom and enlightenment. You do not need to seek elsewhere; it is all within.
